DESIGNER DRUGS / BIO

Life's quite different now for Designer Drugs.

The New York duo of Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson have come a long way since dropping their 2011 Ultra Records debut full-length, Hardcore/Softcore. In that time period, they played countless shows all over the world, did numerous remixes, carved out a rabid following that stretched from Asia to Europe, and Theo even graduated with a Doctorate from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine—"number one in the country for student debt," as he fondly puts it. Most people never get the chance to even set foot in six of the seven continents, but these boys performed to fervent audiences everywhere except Antarctica, which is too cold anyway for EDM. However, something didn't feel right.

"It was a weird, dark time," sighs Michael. "When Theo wasn't in school, we were doing shows. We got caught up in touring and partying all the time. It was a little out of control and the album reflected that. I feel like now we finally got to focus on the music 100 percent for the first time in our career."

That brings us to the group's second full-length offering, Graduation. The title proves a propos for a myriad of reasons. The boys have grown up personally and creatively, and the music has evolved immensely.

"Our last album was more esoteric and leftfield," says Theo, more properly "Dr. Nelson". "The new songs have our signature sound, but they're dance floor-friendly. We're covering a larger spectrum. Of course, it's electronic, but there's an infusion of punk and indie rock too. There's a little dubstep. There are a lot of big choruses too."

Michael adds, "Since Theo's graduated from school, we actually had the chance to sit down in the studio together and flesh out ideas. This is what we've always wanted to achieve. We took everything farther in terms of songwriting and production."

That progression comes through loud and clear on the first single "Space Based". With a massive build up and shimmering hook, it's a club epic that only Designer Drugs could cook up. It's as intoxicating as it is inimitable.

"We just made a fucking banger," smiles Michael. "This is a pivotal point in our career. We didn't nerd out too hard and get overly weird. We kept everything simple. The music is used to be more aggressive and dissonant. We got that out of our system, and now we're doing more musical compositions."

On the album, "The Drugs Are In Control" and "The Elephant" embody the boundlessness inherent in their sound. Elsewhere, Designer Drugs team up with Alvin Risk for an explosive collaboration entitled "Empty Hearted" that teeters between pop bliss and grimy dubstep excess.

"We've known Alvin Risk for a long time," Michael goes on. "It was written like an electro pop song, but I thought this nasty, dirty dubstep would complement the upbeat peppiness. Alvin showed us some things, and we showed him some things. We got to take everything to the next level."

That's par for the course with Designer Drugs though. They've become veritable staples in the scene, racking up nearly 100 official remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey and Little Boots to Annie and Thieves Like Us. In addition, they've performed over 500 shows at this point. Making a strong digital imprint, they also garnered over 144k Facebook fans and over 2.3 million YouTube views. Plus, they've got their sights on crisscrossing the planet yet again on another massive tour cycle.

Ultimately, Graduation is all about the music. "We're removed from the industry," explains Michael. "We do our own thing in our own way. We want to give people music that has vibe. It's something they can hopefully feel."

"If the music's good enough to get them naked, that works too," laughs Theo.

Big Gigantic + Kill Paris + Manic Focus @ Upstate Concert Hall 2-12-13

We here at PeepThis are especially excited for this banger brought to you by my favorite EDM heavy hitters NV Concepts and Mass EDMC!  Make sure you do yourself a favor and Peep This show.

Big Gigantic @ Upstate Concert Hall - Facebook Event Page

Ticket Link

My first experience of  BIG GIGANTIC!  was at Camp Bisco.  When I saw them I was immediately put into a dancing frenzy along with all of my fellow campers.  There is something unifying to Big Gigantics flow and melodic Saxophone riffs.

I was also recently blessed with an amazing performance on Holy Ship this past January.  There they absolutely leveled the large cruise ship theatre.  This was my 2nd cruise and I have never seen that particular venue so electric.  Their stage presence was nothing short of perfection.  The saxophone/producer, Dominic Lalli, would look up and point to different peeps going crazy in the crowd.  Even the drummer Jeremy Salken would lift up a drum stick mid beat and incite frenzies.

If you've never seen these guys live then clear your schedule Tuesday night and all day Wednesday cause we're going in.

Quick Bio:
Big Gigantic, whose blend of mind-bending beats, thunderous bass, and frenetic melodies has developed a rabid following since forming in 2008, will take their sound to yet another dimension this October when they release 'Nocturnal.' The album, by Boulder, CO-based saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken, solidifies Big Gigantic as a key player in the worlds of electronic, dance, and hip-hop.

With a provocative sound that's as thoughtful as it is danceable, Big Gigantic's new songs like "Nocturnal" and "Hopscotch" weave whirling melodies into addictive beats and samples that wouldn't sound out of place on a Kanye West or LCD Soundsystem single. No genre is off-limits for Big Gigantic, whose breakthrough sound channels everything from funk and dub-step to house and hip-hop.

Already a smash on the festival circuit, Big Gigantic's transcendent live shows are a showcase of brilliant improvisation and a tightly-knit bond between Salken and Lalli, who breathlessly alternates between keys, sax and laptop, building a futuristic wall of sound that keeps the crowd on its feet. The marathon shows feature a variety of songs new, old and unreleased, as well as outside-of-the-box remixes including Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow," Aloe Blacc's 'I need a Dollar,' and Notorious B.I.G.'s "Notorious Thugs."

Now if a rare performance by Big Gigantic wasn't enough of a reason to come out on a winter weeknight, no worries cause KILL PARIS will be in the house!

Not only is Kill Paris (Corey Baker) an extremely talented producer he is also an amazing track selector and live performer.  He uses midi controllers to loop live instruments and synths.  His mixes range from slow soul "baby making music" to heavy dropping dub.  I am extremely stoked to see this man debut in the 518.

You'd think that'd be all the support you need....but wait!  Manic Focus will also be rockin the strip mall stage.  Damn this lineup is no joke.   If I close my eyes I think I'm listening to a Pretty Lights clone.  It's gettin hyphy in this bitch!

Designer Drugs @ Fuze Box 2-15-13

That's right no need to rub your eyes, you've read the title correctly!  Designer Drugs is coming to the quaint venue in Albany called Fuze Box and Tickets are still available!  This unique little venue looks like a retro dinner from the outside but in reality its a staple for live music and EDM in the 518.

This time PeepThis has pulled some strings and have secured Designer Drugs for a once in a lifetime VIP experience.  You will be guaranteed a 50' or less viewing area from on of the OG's of Dirty Electro.

Quick Bio:
Ask the DJ/production duo DESIGNER DRUGS how many air miles they’ve logged over the past year and the answer requires more than a bit of calculating. “Over 300,000,” Michael Vincent Patrick referencing numerous spots around the world where the group has performed. “I have a really nice apartment in New York City, but I’ve only been there three days this month.”

It’s a testament both to the duo’s popularity and work ethic that that number may become the annual norm. After nearly 50 remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey to Annie to Thieves Like Us, the diverse electronic group, comprised of Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, is set to release their debut album HARDCORE/SOFTCORE on Ultra Records in February 2011.

Where past productions and remixes have been on the poppier end of the musical spectrum, Hardcore conjures up a darker, edgier vibe – think the throbbing, industrial-heavy opening club scene in “The Doom Generation” – yet still retains a melodic center on many of the tracks. “I think we’re making music for the apocalypse,” says Michael, only half-joking. “The state of society is at a place where people just don’t give a fuck and that’s what inspires our music.”

School hasn’t stopped the group from putting on memorable live sets as much as possible. Spend a few minutes at one of DESIGNER DRUGS’ live shows and you’ll see the normally humble pair, spurred on by the intense energy of their music, transform into a different beast. “It gets pretty wild,” admits Michael. “Even though we’re mellow, there’s lots of stage diving and almost slam dancing. It’s next level dance club shit that almost morphs into that ‘90s hardcore/punk vibe.”

As you know the capacity at Fuze Box is very limited so tickets will sell out fast.  A very limited amount of tickets will be saved for day of ticket sales.  They will only be available at the door starting at 8pm on February 15th '13.

TIX ARE ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH OUR FACEBOOK PAGE:

Steve Aoki Headlining Winter White Tour - 1-18-13

Steve Aoki is known for his unpredictable and entertaining performances.  His crowds can expect to have champagne sprayed onto them while dancing in a sea of fans at his incredible show of electronic dance music. In the past, Steve Aoki has worked with Duran Duran, Gaga, Drake and Kid Cudi. You will get a taste of Steve Aoki’s work on Travis Barker’s “Misfits” and LMFAO’s “Livin’ My Love.”  There is no sign of Steve Aoki slowing down; the sky’s the limit.

Aoki’s It’s the End of the World as We Know It
Aoki’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” is an example of his flexibility to produce outside of mainstream EDM. The EP features three popular releases such as Singularity featuring My Name is Kay and Angger Dimas, and Omega featuring Don Senna and Miss Palmer, and Transcend featuring Rune RK. These tracks feed energy to the crowd.

Aoki’s Background
Born in Miami, Aoki spent most of his childhood in Newport Beach. Aoki attended the University of California in Santa Barbara. He earned a degree in Women’s Studies and in Sociology. While at college, he hosted concerts in the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative. By the end of his early twenties, Aoki had started his own record label, Dim Mak Records.

Steve Aoki’s next performance will be with the Winter White Tour on January 31st, at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY.  As far as New York entertainment goes, this is a show east-coasters will want to make the trip for.
Performing along with Steve Aoki will be Mat Zo, DSK CHK, and DVDJ Dread.  You can buy tickets through ticketmaster
